Pakistan opener Sahibzada Farhan delivered a blazing half-century to set the tone as the Men in Green got off to a brilliant start against India in the Asia Cup 2025 final at Dubai on Sunday, September 28.
Farhan, 29, was under the spotlight to see if he would repeat the controversial celebration that had drawn criticism in their previous Super 4 encounter against India. In that game, he had raised his bat like a rifle after scoring fifty, a gesture that provoked outrage among fans and drew a formal warning from the ICC. This time, the batter adopted a more subdued approach, simply raising his bat and smiling toward the dugout after reaching the milestone. His innings featured five boundaries and three sixes, showcasing his ability to take on India’s top bowlers, including Jasprit Bumrah, Shivam Dube, Kuldeep Yadav, and Axar Patel.
IND vs PAK, Asia Cup 2025 Final Live Updates
The previous match between the two sides had already been tense, with Haris Rauf also drawing attention after making gestures that were interpreted as claims of Pakistan downing Indian fighter jets. The ICC had cautioned players against any such displays, emphasising adherence to the “spirit of the game.” Both teams have been involved in heated moments throughout the tournament, including the famous handshake snub at the toss, further fueling the intensity of this historic rivalry.
Captain Suryakumar Yadav and his team have also been vocal about their solidarity with the victims of the recent Pahalgam terror attacks, as well as in support of India’s military operations against terror camps in Pakistan under Operation Sindoor. On the field, India looked to channel this focus into disciplined performances, especially in response to Pakistan’s early dominance in the powerplay.
India, meanwhile, was without all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who was sidelined due to a niggle sustained during the Sri Lanka game. This left India with just one specialist pacer, Jasprit Bumrah, putting added pressure on the Men in Blue’s bowling attack. Despite this, Pakistan’s strong start was met with a measured response from India’s spinners, Varun Chakaravarthy and Axar Patel, who came into the middle overs to stem the run flow and stabilise the innings.
With Farhan’s composed fifty setting Pakistan up at the top, the stage was set for an intense contest, highlighting not only the cricketing skills of the players but also the simmering emotions and rivalry between the two neighbouring cricketing powerhouses. The Men in Green now had momentum, but India’s depth in batting and spin resources suggested that the title clash could still swing either way as the match progressed.
