Egypt and Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah received a hero's welcome as he reached Cairo after finishing fourth in Ballon d'Or rankings. Upon arrival at Cairo International Airport, Salah was greeted by large crowds including fans, schoolchildren, and supporters waving national flags and chanting "Salah! Salah!" ahead of Egypt’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers. The reception underscored Salah’s prominent status as he returned to join the national team after a standout season with Liverpool and his highest-ever finish in the Ballon d'Or voting.
Salah’s reception in Cairo came as the Egyptian national team prepares for a critical World Cup qualifying match against Djibouti on October 8. Egypt currently leads Group A with 20 points, and a win would secure their fourth appearance at the FIFA World Cup. Salah is expected to rejoin full training with the national squad on Monday following his return.
Premier League: Full coverage
Salah’s return is significant for both the player and the national team. After helping Liverpool clinch the Premier League title last season with 34 goals and 23 assists in 52 matches, Salah was named Premier League Player of the Season. This form contributed to his fourth-place finish in the Ballon d’Or voting, ranking just behind Ousmane Dembele, Lamine Yamal, and Vitinha, marking his highest position in the award’s history.
The Egyptian Football Association publicly praised Salah following the Ballon d'Or announcement, stating, “You are the best in every language, and one step to the dream,” in reference to the nation’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.
The atmosphere at the airport reflected widespread anticipation for Salah’s role in the upcoming qualifier. The Egyptian star hasn't had the best of times in the Premier League this season as he struggled during Liverpool's recent loss to Chelsea.
Egypt will be hoping that their talisman can get into prime form and help them seal their qualification.
