Is Suryakumar Yadav Facing Pressure? Former Coach Weighs In
Suryakumar Yadav's recent dip in form has raised concerns, but former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar believes the upcoming T20I series in Australia could be the turning point. Nayar suggests the pace and bounce of Australian pitches will suit Yadav's aggressive playing style.
Performance Under Scrutiny
Yadav's performance in the recent Asia Cup T20 tournament was underwhelming, with only 72 runs in seven matches. His overall performance in the 2025 season has also been subpar, with 100 runs in 11 innings at a strike rate of 105.26. Since taking on the role of India's T20I captain in July 2024, he has scored 330 runs with only two half-centuries.
Internal Pressure Mounting
Nayar emphasized the internal pressure Yadav might be facing. "As India's T20I Captain and someone who's been the number one ranked batter in T20I cricket for a long period of time, Suryakumar's extended run without significant scores at number three will inevitably create internal scrutiny," Nayar stated. He added that while team victories can mask individual struggles, a continued downturn in results will inevitably raise questions about Yadav's place in the team.
Opportunity for Young Players
Nayar also highlighted the significance of the Australian series for the newer members of the Indian squad. This tour represents their first experience of playing T20 International cricket against a top-tier team in challenging conditions. It is a valuable opportunity for young players to prove their mettle, gain confidence, and build momentum.
