Australia once again showcased their renowned batting depth in their Women’s World Cup clash against Pakistan at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. On Wednesday, October 8, Alana King produced a gritty half-century that rescued Australia from a perilous position. The 29-year-old allrounder stepped up when the Aussies were reeling at 76 for seven in 21.2 overs after being asked to bat first.
King remained unbeaten on 51 off 49 balls, striking three fours and as many sixes, as Australia recovered to post a competitive 221 for nine in 50 overs. Coming in at No. 10 with the score at 115 for eight, King combined composure with intent, crafting a 48-ball fifty that turned a modest total into a fighting one.
Her knock came at a time when Nashra Sandhu had ripped through Australia’s top and middle order with three wickets, while Rameen Shamim and Fatima Sana chipped in with two each. Just when Pakistan looked poised for their maiden win over Australia in women’s internationals, King turned the tide.

She found an ideal partner in Beth Mooney, who anchored the innings with a superb 109 off 114 balls. While Mooney held one end, King’s late onslaught injected much-needed momentum, as she smartly rotated the strike before launching a fierce counterattack on Pakistan’s seamers.
The innings also marked King’s highest ODI score, surpassing her previous best of 46 against Bangladesh in Mirpur last year — a testament to her evolution as a dependable lower-order batter. The duo’s 106-run ninth-wicket stand ensured Australia batted out the full 50 overs.
Since making her ODI debut in 2022, King has scored 264 runs in 42 matches at an average of 18.85, underlining her growing value as a finisher in Australia’s lineup. With the ball, King has flourished across all three formats for her national team.
