With preparations hampered by a disrupted training camp, the Indian football team faces a crucial test against Singapore in their AFC Asian Cup qualifying third-round match on Thursday. The clash, to be held in Singapore, could prove decisive in India’s bid for a third consecutive Asian Cup qualification.
The build-up to the game has been far from ideal. Head coach Khalid Jamil, appointed in August, had called a 30-member squad for a national camp in Bengaluru beginning September 20. However, 14 players, including captain Sunil Chhetri, were not released by their clubs in time, leaving Jamil with just two defenders in the early sessions. Most players joined only towards the end of September, giving the team barely a week of full preparation before departing for Singapore.
Despite the challenges, there was some positive news with Sandesh Jhingan returning to the squad after recovering from a cheekbone surgery sustained during the CAFA Nations Cup in September. Ranked 134th, India are bottom of Group C with just one point from two games — a goalless draw against Bangladesh and a 0–1 defeat to Hong Kong. In contrast, Singapore sit atop the group with four points. With only the group winners progressing to the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, Thursday’s fixture carries enormous weight for both sides.
Jamil, however, has urged focus and patience. “We are not looking at the overall picture right now. There are still four matches to go, and the next one against Singapore is the most important for us. We can’t look too far ahead — we must go one step at a time,” he said.
India defender Rahul Bheke echoed the sentiment, describing the double-header against Singapore — the return leg will be played on October 14 in Goa — as decisive. “These two games are perhaps the most crucial for us. They’re playing at home, and it won’t be easy. We must do everything we can to get the points,” Bheke said.
Historically, little separates the two teams. India have 12 wins compared to Singapore’s 11, with four draws. The last meeting ended 1–1 in 2022, with Ashique Kuruniyan cancelling out Ikhsan Fandi’s opener. In Singapore, however, the hosts have had the upper hand — eight wins to India’s six, including a 2–0 victory in their last home meeting in 2012.
Singapore, ranked 158th, are led by interim coach Gavin Lee, who is yet to secure a win since taking charge in June. The Lions will be boosted by the return of captain Hariss Harun, who missed the September friendlies through injury. Up front, they rely heavily on Ikhsan Fandi, who has scored 21 goals in 41 international appearances and currently plays for Ratchaburi FC in Thailand. Rising star Jonan Tan, a 19-year-old forward with Portuguese side Vizela FC’s U23s, has earned his first national call-up.
India’s squad sees 10 changes from the CAFA Nations Cup, with Chhetri, Brandon Fernandes, Sahal Abdul Samad, and Liston Colaco among the key inclusions. Goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, recalling the 2022 draw, said: “It was a tight match last time, but they’ve improved since then. We need to step up and get the win.”
Kick-off is scheduled for 5 pm IST as India aim to revive their campaign and keep their Asian Cup dream alive.
