Djokovic Mounts Impressive Comeback Against De Minaur at Wimbledon
London: Novak Djokovic showcased his resilience and experience on Wimbledon's Centre Court, overcoming a shaky start to defeat Alex de Minaur and secure his place in the quarterfinals. The match, a compelling display of contrasting styles, ultimately saw the Serbian champion triumph in four sets.
After a sluggish first set where he managed to win only 14 points, Djokovic, who appeared to be struggling physically, regrouped to dominate the remainder of the match. He secured a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory in three hours and 18 minutes, marking his 16th quarterfinal appearance at Wimbledon.
The conditions at SW19 were far from ideal, with wet and windy weather creating challenges for both players. Despite the presence of the legendary Roger Federer in the stands, De Minaur initially seized the initiative, capitalizing on Djokovic's slow start.
However, as the match progressed, Djokovic found his rhythm, dictating play with his powerful forehand and forcing De Minaur onto the defensive. The Australian, who had previously withdrawn from Wimbledon due to injury, fought valiantly but ultimately succumbed to Djokovic's relentless pressure.
The second set saw a series of breaks, with De Minaur winning a marathon second game that featured nine deuces. However, Djokovic quickly regained control, holding serve and establishing a 3-1 lead. He then carried this momentum into the third set, breaking De Minaur's serve to take a two-sets-to-one advantage.
Despite De Minaur surging to a 4-1 lead in the fourth set, Djokovic demonstrated his unwavering determination. He broke back in the seventh game, leveled the score at 4-4, and then closed out the match, denying De Minaur any chance of a comeback.
When asked about his apparent discomfort during the match, Djokovic dismissed any serious concerns, attributing it to the physical demands of the long rallies. He also humorously acknowledged Federer's presence, joking about breaking a "curse" after losing previous matches attended by the Swiss maestro.
In another notable fourth-round match, Italian Flavio Cobolli defeated Marin Cilic in four sets to reach his first Wimbledon quarterfinal. Cobolli will now face his idol, Djokovic, in a highly anticipated clash.
Belinda Bencic also advanced to the quarterfinals, defeating Ekaterina Alexandrova in straight sets.
