While Ben Duckett hit the headlines for his 149, the England skipper was also full of praise for Zak Crawley's 65 as the openers set up England's tall run chase

Ben Stokes lauded the exceptional 188-run opening partnership between Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley, recognizing it as the cornerstone of England's successful pursuit of 371 in the fourth innings of the Headingley Test against India. While Duckett's impressive 149 grabbed headlines, Stokes emphasized the critical role of Crawley's 65 in establishing a disruptive and complementary dynamic at the top of the batting order.

Stokes commented, "When chasing 370, a strong start is essential. Minimizing early wicket losses is crucial, and the way Zak approached it alongside Ben was vital. Their partnership set the tone for our game."

He further elaborated on the pair's synergy: "Zak's contribution was immense. Their styles complement each other perfectly. The left-right combination, with their contrasting statures, makes it incredibly challenging for bowlers to find a rhythm. When they're both in form, it can be a nightmare for the opposition. While Duckett scored 149, Zak's 65 was equally significant. He skillfully managed the situation, recognizing when to relieve pressure. Their opening partnership has consistently delivered over the past few years."

Stokes also acknowledged Duckett's dominance against Ravindra Jadeja, highlighting his audacious use of the reverse sweep. He regards Duckett as one of the best players of spin in the world, especially praising his execution of that particular shot. "I spoke with him during the tea or rain break," Stokes revealed. "He's among the best at reverse sweeping and excels against spin, particularly on challenging surfaces."

Stokes even sought Duckett's advice during his own innings, seeking to refine his approach against spin. "I asked him for his insights on how I could improve my chances. I felt like I was either pushing forward or back, trying to manipulate the ball on the leg side."

Stokes continued, "Adopting a clear strategy with reverse sweeps was my approach. While the conditions were difficult, maintaining clarity and confidence in my actions helped me to pressure the close-in fielders."

This victory marked the sixth time under Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum that England has successfully chased down a target of 250 or more in the fourth innings. Stokes attributes their success to a simple and relaxed approach.

"Baz and I share a simple mindset when it comes to cricket," Stokes explained. "Ultimately, it's about scoring one more run than the opposition. We try to maintain a simple and calm environment."

He added, "The atmosphere in the dressing room is crucial when chasing large totals. The players need to be relaxed and focused on their roles. Maintaining a calm and relaxed vibe helps them handle the pressure in the middle."

"The plan yesterday was straightforward: bat out the remaining overs and we would win, given the scoring rate of this ground. Historically, the scoring rate here has been over four runs per over, even without teams taking significant risks, except perhaps Rishabh Pant. It's simply a very fast-scoring ground."
