A potential future star of Indian cricket has emerged, capturing attention not only for his batting prowess but also for his choice of jersey number. Vaibhav Suryavanshi, a 14-year-old, made a striking debut for India U19 against England U19 in a one-day match at the County Ground in Hove. He smashed a remarkable 48 runs off just 19 balls.
What ignited social media was his jersey number: 18, famously worn by Virat Kohli.
Fans quickly recognized the significance, with many interpreting it as a symbolic succession.
While comparing Suryavanshi to Kohli remains premature, his fearless approach and impressive strokeplay have undoubtedly made a strong impression.
Opening the innings, the young talent propelled India's pursuit of 175 runs with a barrage of boundaries and towering sixes. Partnering with captain Ayush Mhatre, the pair swiftly accumulated 71 runs in a mere 7.3 overs. Suryavanshi's innings featured five sixes and three fours before he was caught for 48 off 19 deliveries, narrowly missing a debut half-century.
India U19 ultimately secured a six-wicket victory, with wicketkeeper-batter Abhigyan Kundu sealing the win with an unbeaten 45 and a match-winning six. Earlier, India's bowlers had dismissed England for 174, with Kanishk Chouhan spearheading the attack with figures of 3 for 20.
Suryavanshi had previously expressed his enthusiasm about playing in English conditions. "I will get a good experience of playing in England. We will try to win a trophy from there as well,” he stated. Based on his debut, he appears to be aiming for dominance, not just participation.
Wearing No. 18 carries considerable expectations, but Vaibhav Suryavanshi seems prepared to embrace the challenge. Indian cricket enthusiasts may have discovered their next major sensation.
