Archer's Test Comeback: A Calculated Risk for England?
Former England captain Nasser Hussain has shared his thoughts on Jofra Archer's inclusion in England's Test squad, describing it as a "gamble worth taking." However, he also advised caution regarding immediately placing Archer in the playing XI for the second Test against India at Edgbaston.
Jofra Archer poised for a potential Test return.
Archer, whose last Test appearance was in February 2021, has been named in the squad for the second Test, scheduled to begin on July 2nd. The 30-year-old has faced numerous elbow and back injuries in recent years. He recently made his return to red-ball cricket for Sussex, bowling 18 overs against Durham and securing figures of 1/32.
Hussain, speaking to Sky Sports, recognized the emotional and physical challenges Archer has overcome: "Firstly, it's great news for Archer and England, considering what Jofra has been through with the injuries, rehab, pain, and mental struggle of repeated injuries and comebacks. It’s fantastic to see him back in the squad... he hasn't played a Test match for four years."
However, the former captain urged against rushing Archer into the starting XI at Edgbaston. "I think it's too much of a risk this week. It may have gone exceptionally well – I'm not familiar with Jofra Archer's physical condition – but it's possible they'll decide to play him this week. The question then becomes, who do you leave out?"
Despite these concerns, Hussain remains optimistic about the long-term benefits of Archer's return. "I still believe it's a worthwhile gamble, but I'm uncertain if it's worth taking this week. I would consider it a week later at Lord's."
England currently leads the five-match series 1-0, following their five-wicket victory at Leeds. The remainder of the squad remains unchanged for Edgbaston.
