Following India's defeat to England in the first Test at Headingley, head coach Gautam Gambhir has emphasized the importance of team performance over individual achievements. Despite Rishabh Pant's impressive twin centuries, Gambhir refused to single out the vice-captain for praise.
Gautam Gambhir's stern reaction reflects India's disappointment after the Test defeat.
India scored a mammoth 835 runs across both innings, with five centuries in total. However, they were unable to defend a target of 371 in the final innings as England secured a historic win, led by Ben Duckett's rapid 149. This marked the first time a team had lost a Test match despite scoring five centuries.
When questioned about Pant's performance, Gambhir curtly acknowledged the other centuries scored. “There are three more centuries as well. Those are big positives as well. Thank you,” he stated, making it clear that the focus should be on the team's overall performance rather than individual milestones.
Fast bowler Harshit Rana has been released from the squad ahead of the second Test. He was initially brought in as injury cover but was no longer needed as the team departed Leeds for Birmingham. Gambhir confirmed that there were no longer any injury concerns. “That’s why we wanted him as backup. But at the moment, everything looks fine,” Gambhir said.
India will now regroup for the second Test at Edgbaston. With England leading the five-match series 1-0, the pressure is on India to bounce back.
