Former Indian fast bowler Varun Aaron has voiced strong criticism of Ravindra Jadeja's performance during the final day of the first Test against England at Headingley. Jadeja, a senior left-arm spinner for India, is facing scrutiny for his lack of accuracy, which contributed to England successfully chasing a challenging target and securing a five-wicket victory, taking a 1-0 lead in the series.

Speaking on Star Sports’ Follow the Blues, Aaron noted that Jadeja failed to capitalize on the rough patches of the pitch on the fifth day. "Reviewing the footage of Jadeja bowling over the wicket, it's evident he frequently missed the rough. His deliveries were either too short, too fast, or too full. They often landed in the middle of the wicket, instead of exploiting the rough," Aaron stated, highlighting Jadeja's inability to consistently target areas that would trouble the batsmen.
Jadeja's final figures of 1 for 104 in 24 overs reflect a lack of control and effectiveness, which India desperately needed during England's run chase. Ben Duckett particularly exploited Jadeja’s bowling, using reverse sweeps to disrupt his rhythm, as England confidently executed their aggressive game plan.
Aaron further questioned Jadeja’s inability to rise to the occasion, particularly given his extensive experience. "Someone with his experience, who typically bowls effectively into the rough – especially in Indian conditions where there is abundant rough – and considering his numerous match-winning partnerships with (Ravichandran) Ashwin, you would expect him to exploit the rough on the fifth day and secure a historic victory for India," he added.
India's bowling strategy is under scrutiny.
This criticism serves as a wake-up call for the Indian bowling unit, which struggled to counter England’s aggressive, counter-attacking approach. While Jadeja has often been a key player in crucial situations, his disappointing performance at Leeds has triggered discussions about India’s bowling strategies, especially when playing overseas.
